National Archives and Records Administration
This is a vast site and really takes some time to figure out how to
use it. But there are many records of reports, letters, pictures, drawings
and much more in an on line service called NAIL. For example, hand written
reports of officers on board the USS Hornet during the search for Amelia
Earhart in the late 30s.
NARA Archival Information
Locator (NAIL)
As part of the Electronic Access Project, NARA has digitized copies
of the National Archives most popular and significant manuscripts, photographs,
maps, drawings and other documents. The 124,000 digital copies are available
for researchers to view online through NAIL. Users are able to search the
descriptions in the system by title, subject, or other keywords. This with
NARA system is a very quick way to access NAIL instead of going through
their home page. There's a link here to the most hit on documents in NAIL
or you can view the month by month listing of updates to the now stopped
NAIL project. Which we should like to see get going again. Theres some
stuff here that is really great stuff.
